Systems/Layers is a collaborative exercise, a suite of modern classicism interspersed with field recordings from the band's fans. The album's second track was its unquestionable highlight, a six-minute swirl of melancholic strings and polyannish piano. As the piece progresses, the piano tries ever more desperately to lift the spirits of the violin and cello, creating a delicious, heartrending tension until their effervescent melodies unite and the percussion stands and cheers. Many modern artists have been influenced by Rachel's, but this track is evidence that few, if any, have challenged the group in vision, clarity, and resonance. Art generally requires the student to surpass the teacher, but with the masterful work of Rachel's, this is a near impossibility. (Richard Allen)
